SPECIAL REPORT

Suicide Bombing at Damascus Church Kills 25, Dozens Injured
A deadly suicide bombing struck the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in the Douilaqa suburbs of Damascus during evening prayers, killing 25 worshippers and injuring over 60 others. The attacker detonated explosives amid a packed congregation, while a second assailant reportedly opened fire before the blast. This marks the deadliest church attack in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
Jihadist Group Claims Responsibility, Regional Fallout Grows
A little-known Sunni extremist faction, Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah, claimed responsibility via encrypted social media channels. The group cited âChristian provocations in Damascusâ as their motive and threatened further attacks against religious minorities. Syrian authorities, supported by international intelligence, attributed the act to an ISIS-affiliated operative and launched raids against suspected jihadist cells.
Condemnation was swift from regional governments and international bodies. The UN, EU, U.S., and Greece urged full investigations and stronger protections for Syriaâs vulnerable minorities. Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa called the bombing a âcowardly act against national unity.â
Christian Community in Mourning and Outcry
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch, John X, condemned the interim governmentâs inability to safeguard Christians, warning of rising insecurity for minority communities. Funerals held the following day drew thousands, with mourners expressing deep fears over sectarian violence reigniting under Syriaâs transitional administration.
The bombing underscores both the Islamic Stateâs ongoing threat and the precarious status of religious minorities amid Syriaâs unstable post-Assad order.

PRAYER REQUESTS
Please lift up our brothers and sisters in India, who are facing a sharp rise in targeted persecution from Hindu extremist groups. In recent attacks, believers have been blinded with chili powder thrown in their eyesâan intentional act meant to disorient, injure, and silence their witness.
These are not isolated incidents. Across multiple states, pastors and house churches are facing harassment, arrests, and violence for simply gathering in the name of Christ.
âBut even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. âDo not fear their threats; do not be frightened.â
