SPECIAL REPORT

A Night of Worship Turned Massacre
On the night of July 26, 2025, what began as a peaceful Catholic vigil in the town of KOn July 27, 2025, Islamist militants from the Islamic State–aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) descended upon the Catholic parish in Komanda, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, during a Silver Jubilee celebration. Early reports indicate 49 Christians, including nine children, were savagely killed in one of the deadliest church massacres in recent memory. Eyewitness accounts describe worshippers being slashed, beheaded, and shot with machetes and firearms while praying inside the church or fleeing into the compound. One survivor recalled, “those who tried to flee… they caught them and killed them in the compound”
ADF Escalation and Regional Instability
This atrocity comes amid a surge in ADF violence. The group, originally founded in Uganda and now operating under the Islamic State–Central Africa Province banner, has increasingly targeted civilian and religious sites in eastern Congo . The Komanda attack highlights their deliberate targeting of peaceful congregations during religious observance. The massacre took place while villagers slept in church halls, celebrating the jubilee before being brutally massacred. Many victims were slaughtered in their homes or near the church compound as they tried to escape
Global Condemnation and a Community in Mourning
Condemnation of the attack was swift. The United Nations, African Union, and various human rights organizations decried the massacre as a war crime, urging the Congolese government to bring the perpetrators to justice. Pope Francis expressed his sorrow and called for peace in the region during his weekly address.
Local leaders have declared days of mourning, while mass funerals have begun for the victims. Survivors, many of whom lost loved ones, are calling for protection and an end to impunity. “They attacked us while we prayed,” one local resident told Al Jazeera. “We need the world to care before we are all gone.”
As investigations continue and the region braces for possible further violence, Komanda stands as a stark reminder of the escalating cost of inaction in eastern Congo’s long-running conflict.
