SPECIAL REPORT

Churches Silenced and Crosses Removed

In Jaranwala, local extremists forced authorities to close the Outreach Church of Jesus, ordering the removal of its cross after repeated threats against Pastor Zahid Sarfraz and his congregation. What began as intimidation has now become outright suppression — with police reportedly acting under pressure from radical groups rather than protecting the victims.

The closure has left dozens of families without a place to worship. “We only want to pray in peace,” one church member said, “but even that has become dangerous.”

Families Attacked and Driven From Their Homes

Persecution has spread beyond church walls. In Vahari District, a Christian family was brutally assaulted by a Muslim moneylender who accused them of unpaid debt — even after they’d repaid him in full. Police refused to intervene.

In Sheikhupura, farmer Zulfiqar Masih and his family were beaten and expelled from their home by a landlord who seized their livestock and property. Local advocates say the family is now in hiding, with little chance of justice.

A Widening Pattern of Oppression

Human rights advocates warn these cases are part of a wider campaign of intimidation against Pakistan’s 4 million Christians. LEAD Ministries, a Christian legal aid group, described the situation as a “systemic erosion of basic freedoms” — where economic exploitation, blasphemy accusations, and land grabs are used to keep Christians silent and afraid.

Pakistan’s government, meanwhile, has been slow to act. Faith leaders are urging international pressure, warning that unchecked persecution could trigger another crisis like the 2023 Jaranwala riots, when more than 20 churches were burned in a single day.

For now, families like Pastor Sarfraz’s continue to pray in secret — holding onto faith in a nation where even prayer has become a risk.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Pakistan, where Christians are facing intensified persecution — from church closures and violent evictions to mounting fear amid renewed instability along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where clashes with Taliban forces have deepened insecurity across the region.

Pray that believers would be shielded from harm and strengthened in their faith. Ask the Lord to move the hearts of government officials to act justly, protect the vulnerable, and uphold freedom of worship. May the Church in Pakistan continue to stand firm, bearing witness to Christ’s peace in a time of turmoil and fear.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 27:1
